The data presented delineate the trajectory of renewable energy consumption in the United States from 1990 to 2023. It showcases a remarkable expansion in renewable energy uptake over the years, with total consumption soaring from 3862.708 Trillion Btu in 1990 to 8244.574 Trillion Btu in 2023.
The data present a clear shift in the sources of renewable energy consumption in the United States from 1990 to 2023. While biomass remained the dominant source, its contribution to the total renewable energy consumption between 1990 and 2023 decreased by over 10%.
On the other hand, the contributions of wind and solar energy saw significant increases. The share of total renewable energy consumption from wind energy increased from 0.24% in 1990 to 17.59% in 2023. Solar energy increased from 1.44% in 1990 to 10.64% in 2023.
Hydroelectric share decreased from 25.86% in 1990 to 9.92% in 2023.
The share of geothermal energy stood at 1.62% in 1990, and it decreased slightly to 1.45% in 2023.
